Once on top you can follow paths to various look-outs, make use of the telescopes and enjoy a light meal or simply a sundowner drink in the restaurant. In summer, early evening is a great time to plan your trip as the sunsets are beautiful. Regardless of the weather, take a windbreaker as it can often be cool on the mountain top.

A warm welcome to Simola…
Located high up in the hills above the Garden Route town of Knysna (South Africa’s favourite holiday town), Simola Golf & Country Estate is a world apart.

Fairways merge seamlessly with lush indigenous vegetation and forests creating an evocative vista of undulating green hills and dales descending gently down to the Knysna River.

From its vantage point, the 325-hectare Estate looks out a spectacular panorama encompassing the full expanse
of the Knysna Lagoon, all the way to the Heads and beyond to the sea.

It is here in this sheltered haven that you may enjoy superb investments, golf, 5-Star accommodation, sumptuous meals and even a pampering at our Spa.

Look down on an undulating sea of green manicured fairways merging with lush indigenous vegetation, stretching all the way down to the Knysna River flowing through fynbos and forests. Behold a vast vista encompassing the full shimmering expanse of the Knysna Lagoon as its mood shifts with the changing light. Discern a thin strip of white water rushing through the famous Knysna Heads from the heaving Indian Ocean beyond. Contemplate hills and valleys rolling northwards as far as the eye can see to the distant blue Outeniqua Mountains, etched forever in the skyline.

A moment of pure pleasure and appreciation as you savour your panoramic view, soaking in the utterly peaceful atmosphere of the Simola Golf & Country Estate. And hardly a breath of wind despite its high vantage.

Hike along dappled trails through age-old forests emerging into the sunlight amidst a mass of fynbos adorned with colourful blooms and teeming with an abundant bird life.

And, of course, if you prefer to take your nature walk accompanied by a small white ball …

… Simola Golf & Country Estate is pure bliss.

The development of Simola Golf & Country Estate stems from an exciting joint venture between Kat Leisure, a hospitality group involved in developing and managing leisure industry properties, and the Osner Group, an Eastern Cape construction and property development company established in 1921.

Appreciative of the superlative natural beauty on the Estate, the developers, right from the beginning, envisaged only top class facilities to compliment the surroundings and add to the experience.

Late in 2002, the Osner Group, an Eastern Cape-based construction and property development company in partnership with the Kat Leisure hospitality group who develop and manage leisure industry properties, acquired 213 hectares of prime real estate high up in the hills above Knysna. The site inspired golf legend Jack Nicklaus to design a course, and Golf Data, South Africa’s leading golf course construction and maintenance company, was contacted to create the Golden Bear’s vision.

Driven by Mr. Avril Kaschula of Kat Leisure, a long hitter with a firm grip and a passion to succeed, the Simola Golf & Country Estate emerged early 2005 as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country with a residential estate offering exceptional investment value as well as a quality lifestyle opportunity.

Baleens is situated one road from the beach in Voëlklip, Hermanus and is an easy walk to the beautiful Blue Flag Grotto Beach… the beach stretches for more than 20 kilometers.

The Hermanus lagoon meets the sea in front of the hotel and the birdlife is spectacular. Behind the hotel rise the majestic Klein River Mountains and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.

We offer the ideal spot to relax in a casual but comfortable atmosphere.

Baleens Hotel enjoys a fabulous location within sight of the beach and the Klein Riviersvlei lagoon. Leave your shoes in the room and go down to the beach (only 90 meters away) to marvel at the birdlife living in the river mouth. Then walk by the edge of the breaking waves of Walker Bay as far as you like along the beautiful and undeveloped stretch of coast to Gansbaai. Take a ride on horseback along the sands, an unforgettable experience. The bathing facilities of Grotto Beach, a Blue Flag beach, are a ten minute stroll along the sands or the bush paths.

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a window into the spectacular oceans surrounding the southern African coast. Situated in the V&A Waterfront, the Aquarium offers its visitors the amazing opportunity to explore below the waterline.

Through displays ranging from the small and almost fantastical Knysna seahorses, to large ragged-tooth sharks, the Aquarium holds wondrous discoveries around every corner. Meet the brave fish that call the cold Atlantic Ocean their home – and the brightly coloured ones that live in the warm Indian Ocean.

Be mesmerised by the swaying of the giant kelp in the aptly named Kelp Forest Exhibit- one of only three living kelp forest displays in the world. Or come face-to-face with giant spider grabs and have an adventurous tactile experience at the Touch Pool.

Take the little ones to the Afrisam Activity Centre where they can do arts-and-crafts, play on the modular climbing unit, watch a puppet show or just colour-in. All of this while they learn about our oceans and the wonderful animals that live in them.

For those qualified, there is the opportunity to dive in the I&J Predator Exhibit with ragged-tooth sharks, a turtle named Joshi and shoals of other predatory fishes. If you have an advanced qualification, diving in the Kelp Forest is one of the things that you must be able to tick off on your “must-do-someday-list”. Booking is essential for the dives and can be done by emailing bookings@aquarium.co.za.

The Two Oceans Aquarium Shop has a wide range of gifts and souvenirs. From t-shirts to soft toys, there’s a gift for everyone.
Shoreline Café provides scrumptious meals for young and old.

The restaurant includes a dedicated children’s play centre (with climbing play unit and arts-and-crafts) which will keep the little ones entertained while mom and dad catch their breath over a cup of coffee. Shoreline Café serves scrumptious breakfasts and lunch and is open from 09:00 until 18:00 daily.

The Durban Botanic Gardens were established at their current site in 1851 and are Africa’s oldest remaining botanic gardens. The gardens contain a collection of sub-tropical plants from around the world.

The gardens occupy an area of 15 hectares and are beautifully laid out with large lawns and trees and a host of other plants. Special attractions include the orchid house, sunken garden, herbarium, Japanese garden, indigenous garden and display house.

One of the main attractions in the park, for many visitors, is the small lake which is home to many wild birds. One may see species such as Pinkbacked Pelican, Sacred Ibis, Grey Heron, African Spoonbill, Red Bishop, Thickbilled Weaver and Egyptian and Spurwinged Goose. Many of these spcies actually breed around the lake. It is a perfect spot for photography as one may easily get close to the birds. There are many other species of birds to be seen while walking around the gardens.

The Durban Botanic Gardens are a popular spot for wedding photographs. From time to time there are also concerts organised featuring local and international artists.

The new entrance features a visitors complex which includes a well-stocked shop and conference facilities. The Botanic Gardens also has a tea garden and kiosk where refreshments are available.
